Firepower Above the Clouds: The Life and Death of the Turret Gunner. Rare Restored Color Footage
Dive deep into the engineering marvels, tactical shifts, and raw courage that shaped the era of the self-defending strategic bomber. In the early days of flight, testing airborne weapons was a radical concept. In 1910, firing a Lewis machine gun from a Model B Wright Flyer yielded a mere 12 percent accuracy rate. Yet, by the 1930s, the aviation world had undergone a drastic transformation. The introduction of the Boulton Paul Overstrand bomber gifted the RAF with the world's first powered turret, providing gunners with heated enclosures and drastically improving hit rates over older, open-air scarf rings. As the United States entered the Second World War, the B-17 Flying Fortress became the ultimate symbol of American airpower. Engineers continually upgraded its defenses, culminating in sophisticated hydraulic turrets like the Sperry A-1, capable of rotating 360 degrees and tracking targets at 40 degrees per second. Despite these advancements, bombers flying deep into occupied Europe faced staggering losses. The USAAF even attempted to create a heavily armored gunship, the YB-40, equipped with additional turrets and massive ammunition reserves. Unfortunately, the heavy gunship could not keep pace with the main bomber stream after bomb drop and was swiftly abandoned as a total failure. Meanwhile, the RAF’s night bombing campaign faced a terrifying threat from German night fighters equipped with Schräge Musik. Utilizing upward-firing 30mm cannons mounted at a 60-degree angle, Luftwaffe interceptors like the Heinkel 219 completely outmaneuvered the British heavy bombers, attacking undetected from below. The culmination of the self-defending bomber arrived with the Cold War-era Convair B-36 Peacemaker. Powered by six massive pusher propellers, the B-36 featured the greatest turret defense system ever devised, boasting sixteen 20mm cannons hidden within retractable housings. However, the violent recoil of its own weaponry consistently damaged its delicate internal vacuum tubes and electronics. With the introduction of high-speed jets and advanced air-to-air missiles, the grand experiment of the heavily armed bomber came to an end, surviving only in the form of remote tail stingers on aircraft like the B-52 and Tu-95 Bear. Explore the definitive technical history of aviation's most fascinating defensive weapon systems.
