Fortress Rabaul: The WWII Aerial Siege Against Japan. Rare And Restored Archives In Color

The history of the Allied campaign in the Southwest Pacific during World War II is a testament to extraordinary logistical engineering and unprecedented aerial strategy. In 1943, the Japanese occupied a vast, shrewdly devised chain of defensive air bases across New Guinea and New Britain. At the heart of this formidable network lay Rabaul, serving as the strategic keystone and widely regarded as the Gibraltar of the South. Simpson Harbor was choked with enemy supply ships, its airfields were heavily fortified with Zero fighters, and roughly one hundred thousand troops were dug into the impenetrable volcanic terrain. Recognizing that a direct amphibious assault would result in a catastrophic loss of Allied lives, General George Kenney and the Fifth Air Force discarded conventional invasion plans. Instead, they executed a brilliant doctrine aimed at dominating the airspace and effectively starving the entrenched Japanese Imperial forces. This masterstroke required methodically neutralizing the enemy's right flank, beginning with daring strikes against Wewak. To achieve this, American engineers and aviators accomplished a unique logistical miracle: the construction of a forward fighter strip at Marilinan, completely supplied by airdrops without a single overland route. Unarmed troop carriers ferried every drop of gasoline, tool, and weapon through treacherous jungle weather. On August 17th, Allied heavy and medium bombers launched from these clandestine strips, catching the Japanese Army Air Service completely unprepared at Wewak. They obliterated over one hundred grounded aircraft in a matter of hours. This vital victory paved the way for the grueling conquests of Salamaua, Lae, and Finchhaven, systematically severing Japanese supply lines and destroying dozens of reinforcement barges plying the Vitiaz Straits. By advancing the bomber line relentlessly, the Allies cornered their ultimate target.
