The Complete Timeline Of The WW2 North African Campaign
On May 13, 1943, British PM Winston Churchill received news of victory in Tunisia, marking the end of enemy resistance in North Africa. This paved the way for Allied operations in Europe. By 1942, Operation Torch launched, aimed at securing Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The British, under General Montgomery, won at El Alamein in October 1942, forcing Rommel to retreat. Montgomery's cautious approach contrasted with Rommel's bold tactics but proved strategically effective. By late 1942, Axis forces bolstered their presence with 152,000 troops in Tunisia, but faced supply issues and Allied advances. Despite Rommel's efforts to regroup, Axis forces were overwhelmed. By May 1943, the Allies achieved total victory in North Africa, paving the way for the invasion of Sicily and Italy.
