Inaugurated in the 1920s, the A8 was the world's first motorway designed for rapid traffic and equipped with a toll system. It represented a significant improvement over the ordinary roads of the time and boosted mobility between Milan and the northern lakeside towns. The journey begins in the northwestern part of Milan, at Viale Certosa, where the highway effectively begins as a continuation of the so-called Ghisallo Overpass and immediately connects with the A4 Turin–Venice motorway, one of the main hubs of the Italian motorway network. At this point, traffic is already heavy, and the A8 immediately becomes an important exit route from the city, heading towards northwestern Lombardy. After the A4 junction, the highway continues northwest on a series of wide, straight carriageways. In the first few kilometers, you'll encounter the metropolitan junctions that provide access to that part of the city and the Milan ring roads. One of the first major connections is with the Tangenziale Nord (A52), allowing those coming from various directions to quickly detour without entering the city center. Continuing along the A8, after leaving the urban area of ​​Milan behind, the road passes through highly urbanized areas and villages in the Milanese hinterland, such as Legnano and Rescaldina, typical commuter hubs to the metropolis. Here, the highway maintains its width and rapid connection function, adapting from urban to suburban mobility without abrupt changes in profile. After the metropolitan section, you reach the Gallarate area, where the A8 shares important connections with other arteries, such as the A8/A26, which continues toward Gravellona Toce, and the Malpensa – Malpensa 2000 expressway, which allows those heading to the airport to reach it without leaving the main infrastructure. The main toll booths for those traveling between Milan and here are also located near Gallarate. After the Gallarate interchange, the A8 continues northward with lanes that gradually narrow depending on traffic, while maintaining two lanes in each direction. The areas it passes through include small Lombard towns such as Cavaria, Solbiate Arno–Albizzate, and Castronno, areas where the landscape alternates between urban spaces and open fields typical of the Lombardy plain. Exits along this stretch provide access to the towns of Varese and surrounding villages. The A8 motorway finally continues to the Azzate–Buguggiate–Varese Ovest exit, where the motorway classification ends. From here, the Strada Statale 707 “Raccordo Gazzada–Varese” (SS 707) begins, which is the natural continuation of the A8 and connects the end of the motorway to the city center of Varese. The SS 707 is a main extra-urban road that initially retains two lanes, then becomes a single carriageway and ends directly in the center of Varese. The SS 707 continues at a slower speed than the highway, but continues to serve as a direct link between the highway area and the city of Varese. This stretch includes several secondary intersections that provide access to city neighborhoods and secondary roads. After crossing the outskirts of the city, the road ends at Largo Ennio Flaiano, a large roundabout located near the center of Varese and an important traffic hub.
