The Palermo-Messina railway (also often referred to as Messina-Palermo) is approximately 224 km (139 miles) long and is the main railway line in northern Sicily and connects the two important cities of Messina and Palermo and the population centers on the Tyrrhenian coast. It is operated by Trenitalia, the national railway company of Italy. The railway line is part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), a major transportation project aimed at improving connectivity between Europe and the Mediterranean region. The line is shared with the Palermo-Catania and Palermo-Agrigento railway and is the ideal continuation of the Palermo-Trapani railway on the Tyrrhenian coast, thus connecting the two opposite cities (Messina and Trapani) of the island from east to west. Initially single-track, the line is being modernized, with plans to double the tracks and electrify the line to increase operating speeds to 250 km/h (155 mph). The modernization project is expected to be completed by 2029 and will reduce travel times between Messina and Palermo by 30 minutes. The railway line is also part of the projected Berlin-Palermo railway axis, which aims to connect Germany and Italy through a high-speed rail network.
