Today is the difficult Henro Rolling and Vertical. First, I took a train to Washoku Station, yesterday's finish point. I headed east on the cycling road toward the sun. It was cold in the morning, but warm when the sun was out. I made good progress and arrived at Carillon Square. I got a stomach ache here and wanted to go to the toilet, but there was no toilet in the square. I was in a pinch, so I quickly searched for a toilet using HenroHelper and headed there. I just made it in time, that was close. I get diarrhea easily in winter. I suddenly started to feel unwell after passing Aki city. What's this? Was it fatigue from yesterday's storm? I took a wrong turn because I was daydreaming, and ended up going all the way to Iokido. I think this was the first time I'd seen Tora-san Jizo. I went back to the breakwater walkway and kept going. My condition gradually worsened. I finally arrived at Oyama Roadside Station and took a break. I was drenched in sweat when I took off my windbreaker. The windbreaker blocks the wind, but it's like a sauna suit, so I sweat a lot. This time, it seems that this caused her to become dehydrated and unwell. I took some fluids, sugar, salt and minerals and set off. I took another break at Karahama Station and then finally started the climb! I was pretty exhausted, having already walked 20km so far. The climb was tough! The wide agricultural road at the beginning was tough, but luckily I didn't have much luggage. And then it was straight up. I was panting and progressing little by little. It was my first time to experience such a tough straight uphill climb. It made me realise that it's best to tackle difficult sections first thing in the morning when you're full of energy. On the way, I met Ieda Shoko! When I said hello, she took off her mask and greeted me back, and cheered me on with a lovely smile, saying "This is tough, isn't it? Just a little more!" I wanted to say, "I read your book!" but I also wanted to take a photo of us together, but I didn't have the energy to do so and I could barely say hello. . Somehow I arrived at Kamimineji Temple. I took a rest on a bench in front of the main hall and prayed. Kamimineji Temple is always beautiful and well-maintained. The scenery is nice and it's one of my favorite temples. On the way back, I stopped by the shop to have some udon. I always visit early in the morning, so this was the first time I've seen the shop open. The udon had a mild flavor with more than 10 kinds of rough vegetables. It was my first time to try bell peppers in udon lol. It warmed both my body and soul. When I talked to the owner, he said that it was originally a drive-in at the foot of the mountain. The descent was very damaging to my knees, soles of my feet, and toes. The remaining 5km was very tough and long. I slightly regretted that I should have ended it at Karahama Station. Somehow I made my way and arrived at the inn. I'm staying in Misono for two nights. When staying for multiple nights, the sheets and futon are usually left as they are, but the futon had been hung out to dry and the sheets had been changed. (The window was open for ventilation, but I didn't notice it and closed it when I realized it was cold in the middle of the night lol) Before dinner, I went to the nearby "Tanotano Onsen" with the Italian pilgrim staying with me. The hot spring felt great - it relieved my fatigue! However, the 13-minute walk to the hot spring was hard. . By the time I got back to the inn, my body was completely cold. . I wish I had a bicycle. Tomorrow, I will walk towards Muroto. From Tsushoji Temple to somewhere just before Saigosakiji Temple! I have traveled over 800km so far, with about 300km left. Since I can't complete the pilgrimage before the year end, there is no need to rush, so I will walk about 30km a day at a leisurely pace.
