¡ANTES DE PONERTE MOREN@ ESCUCHA ESTO! PROTECCIÓN SOLAR Y ADOLESCENCIA | DR. MIGUEL JUAN CENCERRADO

In this new episode, we discuss a topic that seems very simple, but which every summer generates doubts, debates, myths, and important decisions: sun protection during adolescence. Is the sun good or bad? Should it always be avoided? Is sunbathing healthy? Does sunscreen prevent vitamin D production? Are all sunscreens the same? Is there any benefit to having a tan? And what about acne, sports, makeup, the beach, the pool, or the mountains? To answer all of this, we have Dr. Miguel Juan Cencerrado, a dermatologist at the Reina Sofía University Hospital, who helps us clarify a topic full of half-truths, viral phrases, and unclear recommendations. The main message of the episode is very simple: ☀️ the sun is not the enemy, but sunburns are. It's not about living in fear, staying indoors, or becoming obsessed with sun protection. It's about something much more sensible: enjoying the outdoors responsibly. Because the sun has benefits. It influences our mood, our biological rhythms, and vitamin D synthesis. But it's also true that ultraviolet radiation can damage the skin. And that damage isn't always immediately visible. A sunburn might disappear in a few days, but the skin remembers. The phrase "the skin has a memory" isn't just a nice way of speaking. It means that sun damage can accumulate over the years. And this matters a lot during adolescence, because it's a time with many hours spent outdoors: beach, pool, sports, camps, excursions, festivals, mountains, biking, soccer, surfing, skateboarding, walks, outdoor cafes, and a thousand other activities. Furthermore, in adolescence, the risk is often perceived as something distant. What might happen in twenty or thirty years doesn't seem to concern you. And at the same time, a tan still carries significant aesthetic weight. But here's one of the key ideas of the video: 🟠 Being tanned doesn't mean being protected. A tan is the skin's defensive response to ultraviolet radiation. It's not armor. Just because you don't burn easily doesn't mean there's no damage. Tanned skin doesn't mean it's safe. And be careful: sunscreen is important, but proper sun protection involves combining: 🧢 a hat or cap 🕶️ sunglasses 👕 appropriate clothing 🌳 shade ⏰ avoiding midday sun 🧴 appropriate sunscreen 🔁 reapplication after swimming, sweating, or toweling One of the most interesting parts of the episode is when we talk about the myths circulating on social media. Phrases like “sunscreen is toxic,” “if you wear sunscreen you don’t produce vitamin D,” “nobody used sunscreen before and nothing happened,” “your skin gets used to the sun,” or “natural is always better.” The episode also delves into real-life situations for real teenagers. What happens if you have acne and the sunscreen leaves your face oily? What happens if you play sports outdoors? What happens if you wear makeup? If you wear makeup, the order matters: first cleanse your face, then apply sunscreen, wait a few minutes, and then apply makeup. For reapplication, you can use formats like mists, sticks, or powders with SPF, always adapting the choice to your individual needs. If you play sports, protection needs to be even more practical: water- and sweat-resistant sunscreen, reapplication, a hat if the sport allows it, appropriate sunglasses, technical clothing with UV protection in some cases, and avoid training during peak sun hours whenever possible. And be careful in the mountains: just because it's cool doesn't mean it won't burn you. Altitude increases radiation, and surfaces like snow, water, and sand reflect some of that radiation. We also remind you when to consult a doctor about a mole. You should seek medical evaluation if a mole changes shape, color, or size; if it bleeds, hurts, itches persistently; if a new mole appears that's different from the others; or if it simply raises concerns. With your skin, it's better to consult a doctor early than to spend years staring at a photo on your phone. Dr. Miguel Juan Cencerrado's final message is very clear: ☀️ It's not about being afraid of the sun. 🧠 It's about enjoying it responsibly. 🧴 It's not about obsessing over sunscreen. 👕 It's about combining smart measures. 📲 It's not about believing everything you see on social media. 👨‍⚕️ It's about listening to healthcare professionals.
