AUTOLESIONES Y CONDUCTA SUICIDA EN LA ADOLESCENCIA | Inmaculada Carranza y Guillermo García

Today we're discussing a sensitive but necessary topic: emotional distress in adolescence, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. In this program, we're joined by Inmaculada Carranza, a clinical psychologist at the Mental Health Clinical Management Unit of the Reina Sofía University Hospital in Córdoba, and her son, Guillermo García, a psychologist also specializing in adolescents and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Together, they help us look beyond visible behavior and understand what might lie behind a teenager who isolates themselves, gets angry, self-harms, or says they don't want to live. Inma and Guillermo are also mother and son. This close relationship and the maturity gained from discussing these issues many times at home is reflected in this interview, where we can see their high level of professional expertise. Adolescence is a stage of significant brain, emotional, hormonal, and social changes. Adults often see rebellion, silence, irritability, or defiance, but behind it all, there may be suffering, fear, shame, anxiety, loneliness, or an enormous difficulty in asking for help. In this interview, we discuss the influence of social media, pressure to be happy, constant comparison, bullying, family conflicts, and the need to belong. We also address what self-harm really is, why it shouldn't be interpreted as simply "attention cries," what signs can alert families, and how to act without punishing, judging, or increasing guilt. We also tackle a question many families are afraid to ask: Can I ask my child if they've thought about suicide if I feel they might have considered that possibility? And the answer is yes. Asking calmly, lovingly, and clearly doesn't give them ideas; it can open a door for the teenager to stop feeling alone. This video is for mothers, fathers, educators, professionals, and teenagers. We want to convey a clear message: don't wait until everything explodes to ask for help. Listening, validating, supporting, and seeking professional help can make all the difference. If you or someone close to you is in immediate danger, go to the emergency room or call your country's emergency services. In Spain, we have 112, but there's also a specific phone number for these situations: 024. Don't go through this suffering alone.
