S1E06 Flooded World: The Future is Wild

100 million AD: In the warm shallows of a vast tropical sea, a new relationship has formed in the crimson expanse of a red algae reef. Newborn reef gliders float from one red algal "flower" to the next, unaware that danger lurks nearby. Their silent stalker is the Ocean Phantom, a ghostly, jellyfish-like colony organism that glides with eerie elegance. Using its long tentacles and bioluminescent lures, it snares the vulnerable young in a deadly embrace. But in this future ocean, even predators are prey. An adult reef glider, larger and tougher starts to feed on the Ocean Phantom. Under attack the Phantom releases its secret weapon—an army of tiny, fast-moving spindletroopers. These venomous, descendents from sea spiders detach from the Phantom's body and swarm the glider in coordinated waves, biting and stinging until the predator retreats. A massive tropical storm soon strikes the reef. The Ocean Phantom is torn apart, its gelatinous body shredded into pieces. But this apparent destruction is, in fact, an opportunity. Each fragment of the Phantom is capable of regenerating into a fully functioning new Phantom. Through dismemberment, it reproduces—a chillingly efficient strategy that ensures its survival, even in the chaos of the storm. #thefutureiswild #speculativebiology #FloodedWorld #speculativeevolution #reefglider #OceanPhantom ##futureearth #shallowsea #spindletroopers #nudibranch #siphonophore #pycnogonid #seaspider #pollination #animals #futureanimals #tectonics #tectonicplates #platetectonics
