Bargteheide is a town with about 16,000 inhabitants in the district of Stormarn, in Schleswig-Holstein, about 27 km north-east of Hamburg. The station is on the Hamburg - Lübeck railway line and was opened together with it in 1865. The station has a total of three platform tracks on a side platform and an island platform. The platforms have a maximum height of 38cm above the top edge of the rails. A special feature of the station is that access to platform 2/3 is still only possible via a passenger crossing from platform 1. The barriers are operated by the dispatcher, who sits on the ground floor of the entrance building and has a clear view of the crossing through a window. A conversion of the platforms will only take place in the second half of the 2020s for the expansion of the Hamburg S-Bahn. The platforms will then be raised from 38 or 24 cm to 96 cm in height.
