Büchen is a municipality with approx. 6,100 inhabitants in the southeast of Schleswig-Holstein. The station was opened on October 15, 1851 and is a wedge station. The station is the meeting point for the Hamburg - Berlin and Lübeck - Lüneburg rail lines. During the time of the division of Germany, Büchen station was the last station on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. The station consists of six tracks, four of which are platform tracks. Tracks 1 to 4 belong to the Berlin - Hamburg line and tracks (1) 40 & 41 to the Lübeck - Lüneburg line. While the platforms on the Berlin route are both side platforms, there is an island platform and a side platform on the Lüneburg route. The island platform has track numbers 40 & 41, and the side platform number 140 although it is also on track 40. The island platform can be reached via a level crossing, the barriers of which close without warning.
