Midsummer on the Off-Grid Homestead | Duck Egg Surprise, Summer Lamb & Sheep to the Meadow It’s midsummer on our off-grid homestead in Norway. We’re marking St. Hans (Midsummer's Eve) by letting the sheep out onto the summer meadow, now filled with colorful wildflowers gone to seed. Our beloved white shepherd dog turns ten years old and gets a small tribute and a well-deserved meat bone. We discover the biggest duck egg we’ve ever seen… and there’s life inside! Meanwhile, our Muscovy duck is still brooding, but no ducklings just yet. This week also marks the beginning of an exciting new project: digging out what might be an old stone wall, foundation, or root cellar, a spot we dream of turning into a year-round greenhouse one day. And summer surprises us again… with our very first summer lamb! A tiny black girl, likely to be named June. She’s much smaller than the ten spring lambs already bounding around the fields. The forest and pastures are deep green now, and we’re in the season of abundance, when lambs and vegetables grow almost equally fast. Another glimpse into our daily life with off-grid homesteading - with sheep, chickens, ducks, pigs, a donkey, cats, and our dear 10-year-old shepherd dog.
