Aussie Households HIT With $500 Power Bills — As They Swear Prices Are "Falling"

The regulator's price cap fell. Your power bill jumped about $500. Both of those things are true — and here is why. In May, the Australian Energy Regulator's safety-net price — the Default Market Offer — came down for most households in New South Wales and South-East Queensland. The headlines wrote themselves: prices are falling. But the number that lands in your letterbox went the other way. Over the year to February, the electricity households actually paid for was 37 per cent dearer than a year earlier, on the ABS's own measure. We trace how the gap opened: a federal rebate that had been quietly hiding $300 of your bill was switched off on 31 December; network costs kept climbing even as wholesale power eased; and the competition regulator found long-standing customers are still paying a loyalty penalty of around $221 a year for the crime of never switching. If you own your home, this is not someone else's problem. Power is the one bill you cannot refuse — and when it moves, it does not get absorbed, it pushes something else off the table. One in five households now report severe food insecurity. Average energy debt has climbed 28 per cent.
