Australian Pensioners TRAPPED: $600 Pension, $600 Rent, Nowhere to Go

On the full age pension, an older Australian can afford just 165 of the country's 51,238 rentals — and the system is quietly pushing the rest of them out. This is a documentary investigation into how retired Australians are being forced out of housing. The full single age pension pays about $600 a week; rent on an ordinary one-bedroom unit, in most of the country, is also about $600 a week. We trace how that gap opened, who opened it, and where it ends — from a couple in their seventies told by a housing department to "buy a tent", to a retired nurse handed a no-grounds eviction, to caravan parks turning away 20 to 40 families a day. The one number that frames all of it comes from Anglicare's 2025 Rental Affordability Snapshot: of 51,238 rentals advertised on a single weekend, just 165 were affordable on the age pension. For a single retiree in most of the country, the number was zero. If you own your home, this looks like someone else's misfortune. It isn't. A paid-off house is the only thing standing between a comfortable retirement and the rental market — and a growing share of people now in their fifties will reach retirement still renting, into a market that already has almost nothing for them. This is the working model of a system your own retirement is being walked toward. 📚 SOURCES CITED IN THIS VIDEO Anglicare Australia — Rental Affordability Snapshot 2025: https://www.anglicare.asn.au/publications/...
