Overberg 4x4 Adventure: Dune Wild Camping, Gravel Roads & Hidden Towns | Jaunt Weekend

This Overberg Jaunt turned into one of those weekends that reminded us exactly why we love exploring the back roads of South Africa. We started day one in Botrivier and made our way along quiet gravel roads through the Overberg, passing through towns like Hermanus and Elim before taking on Sandy’s Glen Pass for the first time. The main highlight of the day was our dune driving section. With strong winds blowing sand across the dunes, it wasn’t always the most comfortable place to be, but it created an incredible atmosphere and some truly beautiful scenery. That’s part of the adventure — being out there, dealing with the elements, and enjoying the moments that come with it. That night, we wild camped in the dunes under the stars, surrounded by one of the most unique landscapes you can experience on a 4x4 trip. On day two, we packed up camp and left the dunes behind, heading back onto the gravel roads through Bredasdorp and towards Malgas. From there, we loaded the vehicles onto the Malgas Ferry and crossed the Breede River before making our way inland towards Heidelberg. The day ended at Nona Rosa Bush Camp, where a bit of rainy weather rolled in during the afternoon. Luckily, the big lapa gave us the perfect place to braai, relax, and shelter from the rain. Day three was the final leg of the journey. We left Heidelberg, followed the old ox-wagon route over Gysmanshoek Pass, and ended the adventure at Diesel & Crème in Barrydale. This trip had a bit of everything: gravel roads, historic towns, dunes, wind, wild camping, ferry crossings, rain, mountain passes, and great people. A proper Overberg adventure from start to finish.
