Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio: The Second Founder of the Franciscans šŸ•Æļø A whole life in response to a single favor received as a child. Did you know that Saint Bonaventure wrote that, as a child, he was "snatched from the jaws of death" through the intercession of Saint Francis of Assisi? Born around 1217 in Bagnoregio, in Roman Tuscia, the son of the physician Giovanni di Fidanza and Maria di Ritella, this sick child was healed after his mother made a vow to the recently deceased saint of Assisi. From then on, by his own admission, he lived on borrowed time—and dedicated his entire life to repaying that debt: teacher in Paris, Minister General of the Franciscans for seventeen years, Cardinal-Bishop of Albano, and, forevermore, Seraphic Doctor. In this video you will discover: šŸ“œ How the most brilliant student in Paris took the gray habit of the Friars Minor in 1243 and changed his name, Giovanni, to Bonaventure. šŸ”ļø Why, on Mount La Verna in 1259, he wrote "The Soul's Journey to God" and culminated his theology in the phrase: "Ask grace, not doctrine." šŸŽ© The scene from Franciscan tradition in which he left his cardinal's hat hanging from a tree branch while he finished washing his brothers' dishes. * ⛪ How, on July 6, 1274, at the Second Council of Lyon, the Creed was sung in Latin and Greek—and how he died nine days later, on July 15, attended by Pope Gregory X. His was not a life of the sword, but of gradual self-giving: he maintained the house built by another without ever making it his own, he wore the purple robes without ever removing his sackcloth, and he taught that the highest knowledge is not understanding, but loving. Of all his life, only his right hand, with which he wrote, remains—still venerated today in Bagnoregio. If this story has moved you to reflection, share it with someone who might need it and subscribe to continue learning about the lives of the saints. #HistoryOfTheSaints #LivingFaith #SaintBonaventure #SeraphicDoctor #Franciscans #CouncilofLyon šŸ“Œ Chapters 0:00 The Child and the Vow 4:23 The Student Who Chose the Sackcloth 9:26 A Letter from Rome 12:53 The Silence of the Mountain 16:15 Gratitude Made Ink 20:48 The Price of Governing 25:07 The Red Hat on the Branch 29:20 A Creed in Two Languages 34:53 What Fire Did Not Erase 38:24 The Hand That Wrote Love šŸ“š Sources • Saint Bonaventure, Legenda Maior Sancti Francisci (1260–1263) — franciscan-archive.org • Saint Bonaventure, Itinerarium mentis in Deum (1259), Opera Omnia t.
