Aurelius Augustine was born in 354 AD in Thagaste, a small town in the Roman province of Numidia, in North Africa. The son of a pagan father and a deeply devout Christian mother named Monica, he grew up torn between two worlds vying for his soul. He studied rhetoric in Carthage, lived an intense youth marked by pleasure, ambition, and a relentless search for truth, and adhered for nearly a decade to Manichaeism, a dualistic doctrine that promised to explain the origin of evil with a precision that the Christian faith, he then believed, could not offer. Disillusioned by the contradictions of the Manichean system, he traveled to Rome and then to Milan, where the Roman Empire had its de facto capital. There he listened to the sermons of Bishop Ambrose, immersed himself in the texts of the philosopher Plotinus, and experienced a spiritual crisis that culminated in one of the most famous conversions in history: under a fig tree in a Milanese garden, he heard a voice telling him to take and read, opened the letters of Paul of Tarsus, and his life was forever changed. He was baptized on Easter in the year 387, renounced his brilliant imperial career, and returned to Africa to found a monastic community. Ordained a priest almost against his will in Hippo, and later consecrated bishop of that city, he governed his diocese for 35 years while producing a body of work that forever transformed Western theology, philosophy, and culture. The Confessions, The City of God, and De Trinitate are merely the pinnacles of a body of work that encompassed treatises, sermons, letters, and doctrinal polemics against Donatism and Pelagianism. He died on August 28, 430 AD, while the Vandals were besieging his city.
