In this video we explore Friedhof Meidling, one of Vienna's lesser-known cemeteries, located just a short walk from Meidling railway station. Our visit today is inspired by a newly installed outdoor fitness area called "Silent Fit", a project that has sparked debate across Vienna. Some people welcome it as a way to encourage movement and make cemeteries more accessible, while others feel that exercise equipment does not belong in a place dedicated to remembrance and reflection. Along the way we discover much more than expected. We spot a wild European hamster, one of Vienna's most fascinating and endangered urban residents. Surprisingly, Vienna is home to one of the largest remaining populations of European hamsters in Europe. Many visitors walk right past them without ever noticing. We also pass a memorial dedicated to the victims of the February Uprising of 1934, encounter a beehouse supporting local biodiversity, explore the peaceful cemetery woodland area, and finally arrive at the controversial Silent Fit installation. One of the things I enjoy most about exploring Vienna is finding places that rarely appear in guidebooks. Friedhof Meidling is a perfect example. It combines history, nature, wildlife, urban planning and local debate, all within a surprisingly quiet green space in the middle of the city. What do you think?
