We begin inside the Alser Straße station, a beautiful piece of transit history designed by the legendary architect Otto Wagner, who shaped much of Vienna's early modern infrastructure. As we hit the pavement along the Hernalser Gürtel and cross into the historic Hernalser Hauptstraße, you will experience the gritty charm of these outer neighborhoods. While this stretch near the Gürtel may not win any traditional beauty contests, it is packed with layers of community life, including beautiful Gründerzeit architecture and hidden neighborhood projects like "Rübezahl 17," an organic, member-run food cooperative. Along the way, we even spot a quirky moment of local reality, someone abandoned an old tube television right next to the Humana clothes donation box. Continuing our morning route, we approach Ottakringer Straße and cross over to the bustling Brunnenmarkt near Yppenplatz. This is Europe's longest continuous street market, and you will see the stands waking up with an incredible variety of goods, from fresh Mediterranean olives and regional Austrian cheese to colorful spices and textiles. Looming beautifully in the distance is the neo-Gothic Breitenfeld Parish Church, built in the late 19th century. Right by the historic Yppenheim, the local street scene shows its edgy side with a known neighborhood gathering spot for marginalized individuals, before we finish our trek at Josefstädter Straße station. A little-known Viennese secret for my regular viewers: When you look at the Alser Straße station building, notice how it sits on the Gürtel. Back when Otto Wagner built these stations in the late 1890s for the old steam-powered Stadtbahn, he actually reused parts of the old city tax walls, known as the Linienwall, that used to tax goods entering Vienna. You are literally walking along an ancient tax border that divided the inner city from the outer suburbs for generations.
