If so, click here    • Explore Vienna in 4K - All Videos   Most visitors know Vienna for its imperial palaces and elegant city center, but today we head somewhere completely different. Join me on a rainy evening walk through Simmering, Vienna's 11th district, where residential neighborhoods meet industry and everyday life unfolds far away from the tourist hotspots. We start at Simmering station and explore the district despite strong winds and persistent rain. Along the way we pass the Romanian Orthodox Parish Church of Simmering, discover where Vienna's famous Fiaker horses spend their nights, and catch a glimpse of the Vienna Vikings' home field and training grounds. One of the unexpected highlights is Simmering's own "Flat Iron Building", a narrow wedge-shaped corner house that almost no guidebook mentions. We also walk toward the industrial area and get remarkably close to the massive Simmering Power Station, whose chimney can be seen from large parts of eastern Vienna. The plant has been supplying electricity and district heating for generations and plays an important role in the city's energy infrastructure. Rain changes the atmosphere completely. Streets become quieter, reflections appear on the pavement and even snails emerge from their hiding places. Later we pass the Rappachgasse school campus and the historic Anton Schrammel-Hof, a municipal housing complex that recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. It was built during the ambitious social housing programs under Mayor Karl Seitz and still tells the story of Red Vienna today. Sometimes the most interesting parts of Vienna are the ones nobody tells you about. Thank you for joining me on another authentic walk through the city.
