We Almost Got Stuck! Rain, Floodways & Opal Hunting in Outback Queensland

What started as another beautiful day in the Australian Outback quickly turned into one of the most memorable legs of our OZLAPN Adventures! Leaving the stunning Trilby Station on the banks of the Darling River, we travel north through Louth, cross into Queensland, and make our way towards the famous opal town of Yowah. But Mother Nature has other plans! Heavy rain catches us at Bert's Camp, turning the dirt roads into a slippery, muddy challenge as we carefully make our way back to the bitumen. Along the journey we're held up by curious cattle, cross numerous floodways, and Jo spots a turtle stranded in the middle of the road, stopping traffic to safely rescue it. Arriving in Yowah, the rain continues, leaving us spending three muddy nights in the caravan park while recharging our batteries. Once the weather eases, we move to the donation camp where friendly emus greet us each day and we meet passionate opal miners hoping to uncover their next fortune. Could we be lucky too? I buy several rocks with the hope they contain precious Yowah opal, and local expert Paul helps inspect them to see if we've found something special. We finish the days around the Bidgy BBQ campfire, visit the local opal market, capture another spectacular Outback sunrise, and then continue north to discover our next amazing destination.
