Portisch Slowly Squeezed Petrosian to Defeat || Lajos Portisch vs Tigran Petrosian Santa Monica 1966
Lajos Portisch delivers a remarkable positional performance against Tigran Petrosian in this strategic masterpiece. The opening leads to a well-known and apparently balanced position. Yet as the middlegame develops, Portisch gradually takes control of the board. There are no immediate tactics, no direct attacks, and no obvious mistakes by Black. Instead, White slowly improves the placement of every piece while restricting Black’s options. Before long, Petrosian finds himself in a difficult situation. Despite having almost all of his pieces still on the board, many of them are tied to defensive duties. The knight on b7 is forced to defend key weaknesses, while the bishop remains committed to supporting the knight and protecting the position. Piece by piece, Black's army becomes increasingly passive. Portisch, meanwhile, enjoys the exact opposite: active rooks, better coordination, more space, and complete freedom to improve his position. The pressure continues to build. A series of exchanges near the black king further increases White’s activity, and eventually a powerful knight reaches f6. From there, the tactical consequences become impossible to avoid. The knight attacks both black rooks, winning the exchange and exposing the fragility of Black’s position. But the tactic is merely the final consequence of a much deeper strategic success. With an inferior position, passive pieces, and no realistic counterplay, Petrosian recognizes that the game can no longer be saved and resigns. A wonderful example of: positional domination, piece restriction, strategic pressure, and how tactics often arise from superior positioning. #chess #lajosportisch #petrosian #positionalchess #chessstrategy #chesstactics #chessgame just brains, no engines. • Limited Edition Florin Gheorghiu Art in Ch...
