As the attack gains momentum, Petrosian looks for counterplay and even offers an exchange sacrifice, hoping to neutralize the kingside threats while activating his pieces on the queenside. Portisch refuses to be distracted. Instead of simplifying, he keeps his attacking bishop and continues to focus on the initiative. After a series of exchanges, the game enters a fascinating middlegame where both players retain a queen, rook, and bishop — but with opposite-colored bishops on the board. In such positions, the initiative is often more important than material. Portisch was the first to attack, and that proved decisive.
