Portisch Turned g4 Into a Weakness Then Struck Samuel Reshevsky vs Lajos Portisch IZT Amsterdam 1964

Lajos Portisch demonstrates how patience and precise positional play can completely punish an overambitious attack in this Sicilian Paulsen. The opening develops along balanced lines, with both sides fighting for central control and preparing their own attacking plans. White gradually brings the pieces toward the center and begins looking for chances against the black king. Black, however, has plans of his own. Portisch skillfully repositions his knight to c4, forcing White’s bishop into a passive role defending the b2 pawn. While Black quietly increases activity on the queenside, White suddenly launches the advance g4, hoping to begin a kingside attack. The problem? The attack comes too early. Instead of creating immediate threats, the pawn push weakens White’s own king and opens the long diagonal for Black’s powerful white-squared bishop. From that moment on, Portisch patiently shifts his entire strategy toward exploiting the new weaknesses. Every move has a clear purpose. Pressure builds steadily against the e4 pawn, forcing White into passive defense. As Black’s queen, rook, and bishop become increasingly active, White struggles to hold the position together. Then the breakthrough arrives. Portisch finally wins the vulnerable g4 pawn, opening even more lines toward the king. With all of his major pieces perfectly coordinated, the attack becomes irresistible. Threats of checkmate and decisive material loss leave White without an adequate defense. Recognizing that the position can no longer be saved, Reshevsky resigns.
