Hydrangeas in full bloom at the romantic Taisho-era Former Mitsui Shimogamo Villa.

The Former Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa is located south of Shimogamo Shrine, about a 10-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station. The main house, originally built in 1880 at Kiyamachi Sanjō Agaru as a villa for the Mitsui family, was relocated to its current site in 1923. It is considered one of Kyoto’s representative examples of modern architecture. Within the villa grounds, there is a hydrangea garden that beautifully colors the property in June.
