Michigan mother says her son was unjustly detained, calls on leaders to investigate

A Battle Creek mother is calling on city leaders to conduct a formal investigation into her son's detention. Martricia Spearman said her son Jeremiah, 16, was racially profiled, unjustly treated and then detained by Battle Creek police. Sunday was Jeremiah Spearman's second detention in two weeks, according to the Battle Creek Police Department. He was walking on Hubbard Street in the early afternoon, and when officers tried stopping him, he kept walking. Spearman told News Channel 3 he wasn't doing anything wrong, but didn't feel like he needed to speak with officers. According to Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley, officers saw Spearman clutching his pants, making them believe he had a weapon. While officers started patting down Spearman, the teen told them he had a pocket knife on him. Body camera video showed Spearman being put into handcuffs when he refused to give his name to officers. "I feel like it could have been handled so much better," Martricia Spearman said. "I feel like all his rights were violated."
