Attorney questions West Michigan teen's detainment by police while walking home
A West Michigan lawyer said a Battle Creek police body camera video showing officers detaining 16-year-old Jeremiah Spearman is “disturbing,” but said key questions remain about what happened before cameras began recording. Anastase Markou, with the law firm Markou Montague Levine Defense, tells News Channel 3 the video has prompted questions about whether officers violated the teenager’s civil rights. “The video is disturbing, no question about that,” Markou said. “However, we don’t know the full story.” The video shows officers detaining Spearman. In the footage, an officer can be heard explaining that he believed Spearman looked suspicious. Markou tells News Channel 3 that police need more than a general suspicion to justify stopping someone. “The law says that the police need to have something called reasonable suspicion, not just suspicion, reasonable suspicion based on particularized facts that someone’s committing a crime or as evidence of a crime,” Markou said.
