They Said I Wasn't the Same Person - And That's the Point

People often say “you’ve changed” like it’s an accusation. But sometimes becoming a different person is exactly the point. In this episode of Pedal Thoughts, I ride through Pisa and think about the beliefs and values that quietly control our decisions. Many of our strongest reactions are connected to rules we never consciously chose — they were handed to us by our families, culture, friends, teachers or upbringing. That doesn’t automatically make those values good or bad. The more important questions are: Is this value really mine? Does it still serve me? And am I willing to change it if it doesn’t? I talk about loyalty, my Russian/Soviet upbringing, changing my life several times and even my decision to move from a traditional mountain bike to a light e-bike. People may tell you that they no longer recognize you. They may be right. But nobody else can give you permission to change your life. That permission has to come from you.
