The jackals broke into the chickens’ shelter in the middle of the night; I chased them away with an axe, and they ran off into the forest. I’ll have to keep watch every evening, because they might return with the pack. I already have a plan to keep them away. It’s morning here in the mountain village. I went down to the lower village, about seven kilometers away, to do some shopping. I have a full day of work ahead and need to eat well. I bought everything I needed — both for myself and for the animals. On my way back home, I found two little puppies — a girl and a boy — on the road. Most likely, some locals from a distant area who know I live here left them there, certain that I would take them in. Well, my dear friends, I know it’s a surprise for you! I can imagine your smiles when you saw them and your joy knowing I brought them home. I wanted to make you happy, especially since I told you I had found only one. I hope you like my two little ones! I truly wish that when they grow up, they’ll stay here with me, and that I’ll always have enough food for all of us. Life in the mountains isn’t easy, but it’s full of meaning. To put it briefly, I also made some delicious doughnuts, just like my grandmother used to make, with sour cherry jam. I’ve been getting ready for winter too — gathering firewood so we’ll be warm and well. I still have a few logs left to cut. Around here, the work never ends — and that’s a good thing, because it keeps my mind busy. Boredom doesn’t exist when you have work and animals — it’s the perfect balance.
