In this FCU Conference, Venezuelan historian and professor Edgardo Mondolfi Gudat, a member of the National Academy of History, addresses one of the most important transitional experiences of 20th-century Venezuela: the administration of Eleazar López Contreras (1936-1941) following the death of dictator Juan Vicente Gómez. This session constitutes an invaluable contribution to understanding the dismantling of the Gómez regime and the beginning of a new republican institutional framework. Now that the word “transition” is on the minds of Venezuelans, it is worthwhile to examine this period with Mondolfi Gudat—author of The Dangerous Crossroads and coordinator of *Politics in 20th-Century Venezuela*, both published by our press—who oversaw the organization of former President López Contreras's personal archive.
