Venezuelan researcher María Gabriela Colmenares España, PhD in Sociocultural Studies, Director of the Institute for Communication Research (ININCOUCV), and specialist in film theory and analysis and petroculture, is the speaker at our seventh FCU Conference in 2024. She will examine the corporate strategies implemented by Creole and Shell between 1947 and 1968, focusing on audiovisual production to highlight the modernizing impact of oil and its operations in Venezuela. Colmenares identifies how audiovisual media influence our perception of reality and the construction of collective imaginaries, allowing us to understand the socioeconomic and cultural transformations that the country experienced during the first half of the 20th century. Colmenares holds a PhD and a Master's degree in Sociocultural Studies from the Autonomous University of Baja California (Mexicali). Associate Professor and researcher at Andrés Bello Catholic University. She specializes in film and communication research and cultural studies, particularly film theory and analysis, corporate films of the oil industry, and the study of film genres in the various forms of industrial film production, with an emphasis on Venezuela. She is a member of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), the Network for Research on Imaginaries and Representations (RIIR), and the Network of Researchers on Latin American Cinema (RICiLa).
