Following a tradition of meritocracy, Xi Jinping became General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in November 2012. From then until now, he has governed the "emerging power," as China defines itself, with an apparent intellectual sophistication and ideological depth superior to what we are perhaps accustomed to in the politics of Western countries in recent years. This has led him to become one of the three most important leaders and thinkers of modern China, or the People's Republic of China, which emerged in the last century. The Confucian tradition that permeates the culture of the population of this vast Asian country continues to this day through the guiding principles of the State and its relationship with the people. But Confucianism has also been re-examined and reformulated in some aspects under the guidance of Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-Tung) and Deng Xiaoping, who reformed Marxism and adapted it to Chinese needs and culture. These traditions of thought, transformed into state doctrines, form part of Xi Jinping's thought, or Xiism, which we examine in this chapter to understand the strategy designed for China's internal development toward the modernization of all of society (a new objective after lifting the country out of poverty) and in relation to China's participation in the world and its commitment to multilateralism.
