The Biggest Nervous System Myth Keeping You Stuck

What if one of the biggest things slowing your recovery is your definition of safety? Many people believe that healing a dysregulated nervous system means feeling calm, comfortable, relaxed, and symptom-free all the time. As a result, they avoid anything that creates discomfort, anxiety, uncertainty, difficult emotions, or symptom flare-ups. But this approach can unintentionally teach the brain and nervous system that those experiences are dangerous. If walking triggers pain, they stop walking. If emotions arise, they distract themselves. If a conversation feels uncomfortable, they avoid it. Although avoidance often creates short-term relief, it can reinforce the very fear and danger signals that keep chronic pain, anxiety, fatigue, dizziness, and nervous system dysregulation going. In this video, I explain one of the biggest myths about nervous system healing and redefine what safety actually means. You'll learn: • Why safety is more than feeling calm • How avoidance reinforces danger signals • Why discomfort doesn't automatically mean danger • How to build true nervous system safety • Practical ways to approach sensations, emotions, and uncertainty with greater confidence Whether you're recovering from chronic pain, chronic fatigue, anxiety, trauma, or other neuroplastic symptoms, changing your definition of safety may be one of the most important shifts you make. Healing doesn't happen by avoiding discomfort. Healing happens by teaching your brain that discomfort can be safe. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ Sign up for my digital course to get access to over 60+ somatic practices, emotion practices, and brain retraining practices: https://www.mbodycommunity.com/ Sign up for a free 20-minute consultation with one of our therapists: https://www.painpsychotherapy.ca/ ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ I’m Tanner Murtagh (MSW, RSW), a therapist and Qigong teacher creating educational videos on chronic pain, chronic illness, and mind-body healing.
