O Que São Áreas Especiais Para a Biodiversidade
This video, produced by Dr. Alexandre F. Souza, Professor of the Department of Ecology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, explains what special areas for biodiversity conservation are. In this video, Professor Alexandre explores how science identifies and classifies the most important places on the planet for the persistence of life, from Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and Important Bird Areas (IBAs) to Zero Extinction Areas (EZAs), Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites), and Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs). The content demonstrates that identifying and protecting these sites is essential to guarantee the survival of the most threatened species, the integrity of ecosystems, and the services that nature provides to humanity. Concrete examples are analyzed—from the Pantanal to the Atlantic Forest, from the Abrolhos reefs to the Amazon—where the designation of these areas is vital for the ecological, food, and climate security of Brazil and the world. This video is a production of the project "PJ006-2026 - Scientific Dissemination Videos on Ecology and Environment - 2025" of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).
