Have you ever stopped to think about what happens when an entire ecosystem, and not just an isolated species, begins to fail? We often focus on saving "characters" of nature, such as jaguars or turtles, but we forget that they depend on a complex "scenario" to survive. In this video, we explore the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE), the global scientific standard for diagnosing the risk of collapse of natural systems. Unlike the traditional species list, this tool assesses whether forests, mangroves, and reefs are losing their ecological identity and their ability to sustain life. We detail the five fundamental criteria of the methodology in a didactic way. To make the theory concrete, we analyze essential case studies: the historical fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil and the vulnerability of mangroves, highlighting a recent study in Asia that classified ecoregions such as the South China Sea as being in critical condition. Understanding these diagnoses is a decisive step in transforming scientific data into conservation and restoration policies.
