The mental frameworks through which Christianity has conceived of spiritual redemption and the struggle against the tempting devil were fixed in the episode of Christ's Temptations in the desert. After Him, all anchorites underwent the same ordeal. Making visible the anguish and panic in the face of demonic specters was urgent for medieval patrons and artists, but not only for them. Our pictorial and cinematic imagery regarding the battle against the Enemy emerging from the abyss has been forged with the features of medieval iconography, whose presence in the Prado Museum's art collections is evident and offers formidable examples.
