My Prototype Rig Failed... Now What? | Ljungström Rigged 23ft Sharpie Yacht Design Build
What do you do when the very thing you designed the whole yacht around doesn't live up to your expectations? This is probably the most difficult video I've made in the entire build. After finally raising the sail on my prototype Ljungström rig, I have to face a reality that every designer and builder eventually encounters: sometimes an idea that looks promising on paper simply doesn't perform the way you hoped. This isn't a small adjustment. The rig, in its current form, won't deliver the result I designed this 23ft Sharpie trailer yacht around. Making it work as intended would require major changes. That's disappointing—but it's also the nature of building prototypes. Innovation means accepting that failure isn't the opposite of success; it's often part of the path toward it. So instead of pretending everything is fine, I take an honest look at the problem and begin exploring a completely different direction. Ironically, the answer may be to "junk" the rig... in more ways than one. Could a Junk Rig actually be the better solution? At this stage, I haven't made the final decision. Too much is at stake to rush it. But one thing is certain: this project has entered a completely new chapter. Sometimes the biggest setbacks become the most valuable lessons.
