The ICJ Opinion on the Right to Strike
On 21 May 2026, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered a historic advisory opinion (see https://www.icj-cij.org/case/191), declaring that: “The right to strike of workers and their organizations is protected under the Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise Convention, 1948 (No. 87).” (see Convention 87 at https://normlex.ilo.org/dyn/nrmlx_en/...) In this Webinar, our panelists explored the legal and practical implications of this decision. The panelists are Emeritus Professor Halton Cheadle, who argued the South African Government's case before the ICJ; and Christina Olivier, who is the Assistant General Secretary, IndustriALL Global Union. The Webinar is facilitated by Mario Jacobs, CENTROW researcher and lecturer.
