In a moving account that embodies hope amidst tragedy, Aarón Levi Cantillo, a 21-year-old Venezuelan, shared his experience after being trapped for 106 hours under the rubble of the recent earthquakes in Venezuela. His rescue, achieved through the combined efforts of international teams from Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Venezuela, has made him a symbol of survival for a devastated country. In an interview with NTN24, Aarón confessed that he was close to giving up at several points. "I even told the Lord, my God, to take me with him, to end my life because I didn't want to die desperately in the place where I was," the young man recounted. Dehydration and the pain in his throat from shouting for help made his situation increasingly difficult. The young man was at his father's house when the earthquake struck. "All I did was run," he recalled, as the ground shook with increasing intensity. Under the rubble, alongside three other people, Aarón faced moments of confusion and despair. Of his companions, only Bárbara remained alive when they finally heard the voices of the rescuers. "When I heard the rescuers, I felt so much hope," said Aarón, who immediately shouted to Bárbara, "We're going to get out of here, I believe it." He pounded on the ceiling with his hands and shouted with what little strength he had left, hoping to be found. The arrival of approximately 15 members of international rescue teams marked the decisive moment of his rescue. The experience radically transformed the young university student's life. "I see life as something very fragile. Today we're here, and tomorrow we don't know," he reflected.
