On February 12, 1941, Lieutenant General Erwin Rommel arrives in Tripoli. With him, well-trained men, trucks, cannons and armored vehicles. After months of calm in the dunes, the desert will hear the roar of the panzers. In command of the British Troops in Egypt, the BTE, and under the direction of General Wavell, we find Lieutenant General Richard O’Connor, the great winner of Operation “Compass” that had shattered Mussolini’s dreams. At the end of March 1941, Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps troops were ready for action: taking advantage of new armored vehicles, the support of the Luftwaffe in the skies and the numerical weight of the Italian troops, Rommel had devised a bold, almost reckless plan. The first war actions began just over a month after Rommel’s arrival in Tripoli: on March 23, 1941, radio intercepts revealed that the Allies were withdrawing from the area southwest of Agedabia, abandoning the positions they had conquered. General Gariboldi had repeatedly stated to Rommel and his subordinates that Marsa Brega would be more than enough to hold the front, ordering them to stop there if the reconquest operation was successful. But Rommel had no intention of listening to him. Gariboldi’s congratulations and his requests to stop were totally ignored by Rommel, who continued to advance. In what will go down in history as the Benghazi Handicap, an operation so chaotic and sudden that it doesn’t even have an official name, the German Afrika Korps, sprinting across the desert for 600 km, reconquers the whole of Cyrenaica in less than 14 days. The half-destroyed British Western Desert Force takes refuge in the last available stronghold before the desert: Tobruk. Rommel, faced with resistance from the Anglo-Australian garrison led by General Morshead, is forced to accept the state of affairs: a different approach would be needed to conquer the city. Unfortunately for Wavell, another individual equally focused on the result is Winston Churchill: for this reason a new operation is hastily organized to dislodge the Italo-Germans from the Halfaya Pass and reach Tobruk. Despite expectations, “Battleaxe” had caused less than 2000 dead, wounded and missing and no changes on the front. The real tragedy for the British is in the loss of armored vehicles.
