Abrechnung. Hitler, Röhm und die Morde vom 30. Juni 1934
A book presentation with the author Prof. Dr. Peter Longerich Moderated by Dr. Andrea Riedle with a greeting from Matthias Opis (Molden Verlag) 0:00 Welcome 5:39 Greeting from Matthias Opis 10:58 Introduction by Peter Longerich 20:36 Peter Longerich in conversation with Andrea Riedle One year after the National Socialists seized power, the Nazi regime was in crisis. Political successes failed to materialize, and the initial euphoria among its supporters had faded. Ernst Röhm continued to expand the SA and called for a continuation of the "National Socialist revolution." At the same time, conservative opposition forces were forming. On June 30, 1934, and in the days that followed, Hitler, with the help of the police, Gestapo, and SS, as well as logistical support from the Reichswehr, carried out a comprehensive murder operation. Not only Röhm and the SA leadership were shot. The murders of a total of 90 people also targeted a wide variety of other groups and individuals. In his book "Abrechnung" (2024), Peter Longerich reconstructs the complex background of the "Röhm Putsch" and, based on an analysis of contemporary "public sentiment reports," shows how the population reacted to the murders. His conclusion: The series of murders, which began on June 30, 1934, was a pivotal event that profoundly changed the entire dictatorship and paved the way for Hitler's rise to absolute power.
