The Buckland Valley Goldfield – Part 5: Bucket Dredges

In this episode we turn our attention to the true heavyweights of the Buckland Valley — the massive bucket dredges that churned through the valley floor, processing vast quantities of gravel and producing many thousands of ounces of gold. These floating ‘ships of gold’ reshaped the landscape on an industrial scale. We follow in their wake, tracing the paths of old dredge ponds and tailing heaps, and uncovering the physical scars left behind by this era of mechanised mining. Among the debris we discover evidence of breakdowns and repairs, along with surprisingly large discarded and broken machinery components — silent reminders of the immense forces at work in the valley. From quiet paddocks to twisted iron relics, Part 5 explores the dramatic shift from hand mining to full-scale industrial extraction in the Buckland Valley.
