Wandiligong – 3. The 1.3km TUNNEL. The Ultimate Gamble
Episode three of Tour of the Mines, looks at the attempts to explore for the continuation of gold-bearing reefs at great depths below the hills of Wandiligong. From the 1880s, miners began investing in deep and expensive tunnels and shafts. In 1886, we explore the long tunnel commenced by the Bright District Prospecting Company. After 28 years the patients of local shareholders had been stretched to the breaking point limit of 1.3 kilometres. How much gold did they receive? The Diamond Driil and Lone Hand Extended company workings on the Gander’s Reer also expended large sums of capital sinking hundreds of feet below the valley floor. What would the district look like today had they found the similar to the rich deep deposits of Central Victoria’s reefs?
