The Buckland Valley Goldfield – Part 4: Cannons, Shafts & Whips

Just over halfway through the series, the momentum begins to build as we venture into the deeper workings of the Buckland Valley. In this episode, we explore the dramatic landscape carved and reshaped by powerful hydraulic mining operations. Towering cuttings, washed hillsides and vast cobble fields reveal the sheer scale of the engineering effort that once transformed this rugged alpine valley. From a faint impression in the ground, we rediscover traces of an older technology — subtle clues that reconnect us with the ingenuity of the early miners. Along the way, we dust off some bush carpentry skills and bring a small piece of that history back to life. Although a little scratchy, rare archive footage captures an important chapter of our goldfields heritage. Remarkably, many of these sites remain much as they were two decades ago — quiet, weathered, and waiting to tell their story. Thanks for watching — and as always, feel free to like, comment and subscribe to follow the journey through the Buckland Valley Goldfield series.
