"Trouble on the Teifi", a story of Coracle Fisherman of Cenarth in Wales C1940s, F942
A film about the how traditional coracle fisherman of the non-tidal region of the river Teifi near Cenarth in Wales are having to cease their way of life. Laws were introduced which forbid them from fishing using their traditional crafts, and they seem to take this in fairly good spirit. The narrator (uncredited) watches a traditional coracle being made, speaks with the villagers and fisherman of Cenarth, and concludes that these independent folk are at one with the river...or some such. They give him a good send off when he leaves the village too. I believe this is a one off film (labelled print copy one), and does not feel very professional. Sound and light levels vary somewhat. I gave up try to synch the Vox-Pops, I suspect this may not be possible. I think it dates to the late 1940s, possible early 1950s, and gives an interesting insight into a centuries old way of life just as it was ending. The only credit given is to: Produced by: Eric Burrows.
