Les sociétés amérindiennes du Nord face à la colonisation européenne | Exposé de la Fête de LO 2026
Long before the arrival of Europeans, dozens of Native American peoples had built civilizations in North America. This historical presentation traces their adaptation and subsequent annihilation in the face of colonization. This presentation from the Workers' Struggle Festival revisits the history of Native American societies in North America, from their origins to the disappearance of their way of life at the end of the 19th century. It details, in particular, the transformation of farming peoples into nomadic bison hunters like the Comanches and Lakotas after the arrival of the horse, before the expansion of American capitalism forced them onto reservations. 0:00 Introduction — Who are the "Indians" of North America? 1:35 The agricultural civilizations of the East and Southwest before the Europeans 10:30 The Northeastern Indians in the 17th century 12:26 Who was Pocahontas really? 16:12 The Development of the Iroquois 20:42 The Arrival of the Horse and the Birth of the Plains Indian Model (Comanches, Lakotas) 31:33 Settler Expansion and Demographic Collapse (Gold Rushes, Epidemics) 33:48 Armed Resistance and the End of the Plains Way of Life (Little Bighorn, Wounded Knee) 36:05 Conclusion — Societies in Perpetual Adaptation, Not Frozen in Time This historical presentation by Lutte Ouvrière (Workers' Struggle) offers a history of the Native American peoples of North America that departs from the clichés inherited from novels and Hollywood films. Before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, hundreds of peoples speaking more than 400 different languages occupied a territory twenty times larger than France, from the mound builders of the Mississippi Valley to the farming peoples of the Southwest. The presentation demonstrates that these societies were not fixed in an immutable tradition: the arrival of the horse, introduced by Spanish colonists, transformed, for example, farming peoples like the Cheyenne and the Comanche into formidable nomadic bison hunters who would, for a time, dominate the Great Plains. But the development of nascent American capitalism, its demand for raw materials and land, precipitated their collapse in the 19th century: epidemics, gold rushes, treaties never respected, massacres like that of Wounded Knee in 1890, culminating in their confinement to arid reservations cut off from all economic activity. The presentation places this history within a Marxist perspective: the fate of Native American peoples is one of the many horrors produced by the expansion of capitalism, and their capacity to adapt to successive upheavals testifies, contrary to essentialist narratives, to the plasticity of human social organization. A useful history for understanding the building of the United States, the violence of European colonization in North America, and more broadly, the economic mechanisms behind the genocide of Indigenous peoples.
