The Swedes Who Fought in the American Civil War
This is the story of the 3,000–4,000 Swedish immigrants who stepped into America's bloodiest conflict. Officers, engineers, sailors, and farmers who had crossed an ocean in search of land and freedom and who found themselves asked to defend both. They fought under Grant and Sherman, manned ironclad warships, and died in the trenches of Vicksburg. Some rose to the rank of general.
