Isaiah doesn't address anxious stubbornness simply by saying "don't do it," "stop," or "don't be troubled." He goes deeper: the problem is that the people were believing in God in the wrong way. Therefore, before correcting their decision to seek refuge in Egypt, he rebuilds in their hearts the concepts of who God is. In Isaiah 31, the contrast appears forcefully: "the Egyptians are men and not God," "their horses are flesh and not spirit." The people were seeking visible, concrete, human, and military security because they thought that was stronger than trusting in the invisible God. The great point is that Isaiah shows that the concrete is less important than God. Egypt had horses, chariots, and armies, but all of that was flesh. God, on the other hand, is Spirit, sovereign, creator of all things, the one who formed the earth, governs the peoples, and raises up or overthrows kings. The people's anxiety stemmed from fear of Assyria, but also from a limited view of God's power. They were exchanging the most powerful being in the world for human alliances because they forgot that “when God acts, who can stop Him?” For those seeking to understand Isaiah 30 and 31, trust in God amidst anxiety and the danger of seeking security outside the Lord is the central argument. Therefore, Isaiah's powerful imagery does not appear to distance the people from God, but to rebuild security. When he speaks of the Lord's burning anger, of the tongue like a consuming fire, of the breath like a torrent of sulfur, of the scepter that shatters Assyria, and of the Tophet prepared for the king, he is showing that God is not weak in the face of oppressors. The people were afraid of a violent Assyria that destroyed and crushed nations, and Isaiah responds by saying that God is more powerful than the violence of Assyria. The image of a strong, just, and fearsome God becomes a comfort to those who are threatened. Isaiah speaks this way because he saw the glory of God. He is not merely creating strong figures to impress; he carries in his heart the fear of one who said, “Wretched man that I am!” and then answered, “Here I am, send me.” That is why he can say to the people: if you knew God as I have seen Him, this fear would fall to the ground. And the book itself shows that these were not just words: Assyria would fall by “a sword that is not of man,” and in Isaiah 37 the angel of the Lord went forth and struck the Assyrian camp. The people did not win by the strength of Egypt; when they arose in the morning, deliverance had already happened.
