The Raw Reality of Restoring an Abandoned CR500

This is Build Part 8 of the CR500 giveaway build. In the last episode, I rebuilt the wheels from the ground up with a custom set of stainless steel spokes from Buchanan Spoke & Rim and got them trued and dialed in. In this episode, the suspension teardown revealed a lot more than I was expecting. After pulling the shock apart, the shaft was too far gone to save, so I sent everything out to Hygear to have a new one fabricated. The forks told their own story too. Turns out they're actually 1990 units, not 1993, which explains why parts weren't lining up. While I wait on the suspension parts to come back, I shifted focus to every aluminum component on this bike. Swingarm, fork tubes, kicker, brake pedal, linkage, shock body - all of it getting brushed out and finished with Cerakote MC5100 clear. The brake pedal alone would have been $140 to replace. Instead of buying new, I drilled out the old tip and threw it in the brush batch with everything else. This build keeps throwing curveballs. But that's what a 33 year old machine does.
