Break Out of the Fear-Symptom Spiral During a Flare

When symptoms flare, fear, panic and a sense of danger often follow. However, all of these things are what will feed the symptoms and can send you into a spiral. We can acknowledge that this isn't necessarily a bad thing though. Instead, we can view it as proof that these things are making symptoms worse. Connect the dots and you will see how much power your brain perceiving danger holds over your symptoms. We know that it can work in the opposite direction too. Neutralize the fear and symptoms will go down... but this is the challenging part. Trust that flares will settle down, as they normally do and have in the past. Pay attention to whether your fear is spiraling upwards out of control, or if you're able to reign it back in and get back to a more calm state. Call the symptoms out for what they are and respond with the appropriate amount of fear and attention that you should be. What's your default response? Can you change it to something with more clarity and certainty? You don't have to resign yourself to the symptoms, but you can allow them while also checking in with yourself and assessing how you're thinking, feeling, and behaving.
